Watch Out for Ghost Tapping: A Friendly Heads-Up from CJ Network Systems

Hey folks! Here’s a quick heads-up on something sneaky called “ghost tapping.” Basically, scammers have figured out how to lift your card info just by hanging around in crowded places and using these little handheld devices to pick up your tap-to-pay signal. They don’t have to steal your wallet or anything—they just get close enough, and bam, they can run a tiny charge you won’t even notice.

So here’s what’s going on. These folks hang out near busy checkout lines, subway platforms, concerts—anywhere lots of people are just tapping to pay and not paying much attention. Once they capture your card information, they’ll usually start with a tiny charge you won’t even notice on your account. Then later on, once they see the card works, they’ll go for a bigger charge.

How do you stay safe? Super easy stuff: get yourself an RFID-blocking wallet or sleeve, turn on those bank alerts so you get a heads-up if something weird happens, and if you’re in a crowded place, just go old-school and insert the chip or swipe instead of tapping. A few simple tweaks, and you’re ahead of the game.
